For Veterans Day and beyond, roofing contractors are thanking veterans by installing new roofs on their homes for free. As the ongoing pandemic and supply shortages make it difficult for people to rebuild their homes, these efforts are more important than ever.
Up To $500 In Rebates
Below are some recent roofing contractors have done to help eligible veterans.
Angelo's Roofing and Construction in Erie, TN, started its Vet Roofing Program this year by donating a roof to US Marine Corps veteran Chris Chiegler. According to Erie News Now, the vet saved nearly $15,000 in financial stress after the new roof was damaged due to multiple surgeries.
"Maybe I'm going to have to go into the hole to get cash -- maybe foreclose on the house," Chiegler told Erie News Now. "Yes, it's a big, big help financially."
"There's no doubt that COVID has disrupted all of our lives, especially when it comes to home appliances, but we want to thank and support our veterans," said Andy Winka, owner of Angelo's Roofing.
New Metal Roof, Erie Metal Roofs, Toledo, Oh
A leaky roof in Virginia convinced a 95-year-old U.S. Navy veteran in Virginia Beach not to worry about his roof after a contractor surprised him this week.
UDT SEAL Team founder Hugh Lansden contacted Ty Haun of Hydro Assurance to inspect his roof. The veteran left a 50% deposit, but Haun decided not to accept it.
"When I met him, I felt like I was talking to my grandfather. This is an opportunity to give back to someone who has given so much. If everyone can give back a little and be kind, that's good," Haun told NBC affiliate WAVY-TV.
On Monday, Haun returned to Lansden with a check and gave him $10,000, as well as a free roof that Haun's friends and others helped raise to pay for the roof and personal expenses. The American Veterans Initiative, a nonprofit organization that helps veterans, also helped with the project.
Orange Park Family Wins New Roof In 'shingles For Heroes' Program
Total Pro Roofing continues its Free Roofs for Veterans program on November 1 by donating a roof to Georgia native and veteran Ryan Watkins.
"The Pro Composite Team is very easy to work with and I'm thankful to have a new roof before the cold winter sets in," Watkins said.
Founded in 2016, the program replaces the roof for free using a percentage of the profits every time a roofing contractor installs a pay-per-use system. Contractors aim to replace at least one roof per year as part of their program.
"Total Pro Roofing would like to thank everyone who has partnered with Warrior Battalion, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping our customers and veterans, to help put Total Pro Roofing in position to give back," the company said in a statement.
Local Company Provides Free Roof For Military Family
In early November, Michael Moreton of Deerfield, Wis., was the second recipient of Heins Contracting's "Vet Roofing" program.
"We do this because we want to give back to the community, and we think that veterans as a whole are not valued as much as they should be," Brian Heins, owner of Heins Contracting, told CBS /. WISC-TV, affiliated with MyNetworkTV.
Vietnam veteran Horrace Sheffield and his wife, Willie Mae, have helped Sasota County, Florida through a successful business, an after-school homework program, and a school. When it was time for a new roof on their home, Empire Roofing came in.
Roofing Contractors, in partnership with the Denise W. Cooper Foundation, provided Sheffielders with a new roof. The foundation was founded by local radio personality Maverick Johnson, who named it after his father, a Vietnam veteran who was exposed to Agent Orange, the Herald-Tribune reported.

ABC Supply Co. paid for a $30,000 new roof. Inc. and GAF is unfair in that regard, said Shawn Worthington, president of Empire Roofing.
"Being able to participate in a project like this is part of our culture and our DNA and what we stand for," Worthington told the Hearald-Tribune.

According to Fox affiliate KXRM-TV , Del Toro was serving in Afghanistan and suffered serious injuries from an IED that left him in a coma for four months. Two months later, doctors told him he would never walk again and that he would need a ventilator, but Del Toro was walking and breathing on his own and re-enlisted in the Air Force in February 2010.

Inspired by his story, Drury Brothers created a new Del Toro roof with the help of American Roofing Supply.
"I remember seeing him at the ESPYS and his story was amazing. I've always wanted to do something like that," Dalton Drury, project manager for Drury Brothers Roofing, told KXRM-TV. "At this time, we do what we can to help when we can."
Vogel Construction Group may be new to the industry founded in 2020, but it won't shy away from stepping in when the need arises.
According to Naples Florida Weekly, Hannah Vogel, owner of Vogel Construction Group, met with Collier County Wounded Warrior President Dale Mullin and revealed that Bravo was having trouble finding a roofing contractor for the building due to scheduling and cost issues. This project helps provide housing for homeless veterans. Vogel said he visited the home and met the veterans who lived there and was moved by their stories.
